A LESSON FROM OUR PAST HISTORY

I promised to expose Haiti's hidden jewel history not to recite it but, to make us aware of many exceptional events during the revolt.  As we look at  the depth and lenght of that revolution, we noticed the energy and persistence used by these warriors to reach their goal which was "Freedom"  One of the most intriguing acts was the extraordinary event between Major Maitland and Toussaint Louverture.

Imagine to militarily honor an opponent who killed your soldiers; on the other hand, Toussaint Louverture to voluntarly pardon all captured war prisoners and return them to their superior. These two gentlemen, although they were at war; they did not hate each other.  Instead, they respected and  acknowledged each other as human beings.

Although we call ourselves modern societies, we mercilessly murder our war prisoners; we curse those who have the courage to stand and fight against us.  The question is, are we civilized societies as we claim to be? The truth is that; we become more violent societies than our primitive ancestors.

As we are living it today, they are so many senseless killings and even amongst family members.  Why do we develop so much hatred against one another? We must start changing our behaviors because our legacy shall and must be different so, our next generation can once again implement humility, dignity, integrity, and respect for all.  We should learn from these two gentlemen.

Today, as a bonus, I introduce to you  Haitian greatest pride, "The Citadel" it serves as a symbol of liberty, being the first monument to be constructed by black slaves who had gained their freedom.  UNESCO has long recognized the Citadel as one of the world great wonders.  It is located 3000 feet above sea level.  It took 20,000 volunteer free slaves and 15 years to build from 1805 - 1820.  The largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere.

One can not begin to imagine a tired people after fighting a 13-year war would have the courage to spend another 15 years building one of the most iconic historic monuments.  The Citadel is visited by more than 200,000 tourists every year.  Haiti is a beautiful and natural Island; people fall in love with it when they visit.
